On the evening of Monday March 26, 2018 Wayne Baker, 77, passed away in Smithers, BC at Bulkley Valley District Hospital after a very brief battle with cancer. He was comforted by the company of family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Pat and Gladys, and siblings Wanda, Ron, Doreen and Larry. He will be forever remembered by his wife Joan and children Loralie (Raymond) Euverman of St. Albert, AB, Valerie (Dana) Atagi of Smithers, Jay (Terri) Baker of Smithers, and Corinna (Trevor) Bruintjes of Smithers. His grandchildren: Ryan (Dayna), Leigh, Ericka, Samantha, Marcus, Luke, Andie, Elliot, Sophie, Rueben and Lionel and great grandchildren: Corbin and Scott will miss him dearly.
Wayne was born and raised in Vantage, SK where he spent his childhood on the family farm. He was the fifth of nine children in the Baker family. He spent his young adult years in Moose Jaw and Calgary. Wayne and Joan were married in 1962 before moving their young family (Lor and Val) to Smithers in 1965. Jay and Corinna were born in the years following the move to Bulkley Valley.
Wayne helped to build the community of Smithers. He worked for several local construction companies before setting off on his own and establishing DWay Construction in the late 1980s. Wayne continued to work into his retirement years where he balanced small projects with being a Dad and Grandpa.
Wayne was passionate about baseball, curling, and completing every project to his high standard but above all he truly loved family! He and Joan raised their kids in Smithers and Wayne truly found his calling when grandchildren and great grandchildren entered his world. He loved being Grandpa to each one of them. He was true to his prairie roots by cheering for the Roughriders and taking vacations to Saskatchewan where he visited with family and worked on the Baker farm.
A celebration of life was held on March 31, 2018 at the Royal Canadian Legion. Special thanks go to Dr. Strauss who cared for Dad over the years and to Dr. Walker and the nursing staff at BVDH who made Wayne’s last days comfortable. Thank you to everyone for the support and heartfelt wishes that we received during this challenging time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to a cause that is important to you.
