Mrs. Dorothy A. Reitsma passed away at the Houston Health Centre Palliative Care facility in Houston, BC, on February 5, 2018 with her husband Henry at her side and surrounded by her family following her courageous battle with brain cancer.
Born July 14, 1947 in Smithers BC, Dorothy Reitsma, nee Ruiter lived in Houston BC throughout her life.
Dorothy had a rich and fulfilled life. She met the love of her life in Grade 1 when she tutored him in English. Henry and Dorothy were married in July 1968 and soon had a full family with four children: Dale, Troy, Pamela, and Tanya.
She had many different occupations throughout her life beginning as a postal employee in Houston, then briefly as a BC Tel employee in Prince George, as a homemaker, and a private business owner with her partner Henry.
Dorothy was enthusiastically passionate about quilting, sewing, and knitting. Her mother taught her how to knit at only three years old when severe earaches prevented her from playing outside with friends. Her love of sewing, knitting, and quilting was ever present in her life. She taught home economics classes at the Houston Christian School, owned a fabric and sewing store for 8 years, and over the last 10 or so years was very passionate about quilting and involved with the Cut Loose Quilters.
Dorothy and Henry were constant partners in all aspects of their lives. Dorothy and Henry together owned and ran the Reitsma Home Hardware store from 1989 to 2012. They worked together daily and retired together in 2012.
A love of travel took Dorothy and Henry on many adventures. They travelled across Canada with their Honda Goldwing motorcycle as well as often going on trips throughout BC and Alberta to visit friends and family. Dorothy would often take a nap on the back of the bike while Henry drove the motorcycle. They also travelled across the world visiting every continent except Antarctica. Dorothy visited many countries in Europe, travelled in the Middle East, been to India and hiked the Yellow Mountains in China. They visited Australia and South America. She would often go on trips specifically for her passion of quilting and attended many quilting shows throughout the United States and Canada. Dorothy also enjoyed going on cruises and her last trip was a quilting cruise in August 2017 to Alaska with Henry.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 49 years, Henry Reitsma; her siblings Anne Harkema, Martin Ruiter, Walter Ruiter, and Perry Ruiter; her children Dale (Maxine) Reitsma, Troy (Dominique) Reitsma, Pamela (Ken) Stoelwinder, Tanya Reitsma; and 11 grandchildren.
