Welcome to the memorial page for

August Barendregt

March 30, 1929 ~ January 6, 2018 (age 88)

August Geert Jan Barendregt was born in Den Haag, Netherlands on March 30th, 1929. He was the second oldest of his family of 11, consisting of 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

August helped his father with the shoe repair business while growing up.  At the age of 19 he immigrated to Canada with his family and arrived in Foremost, Alberta.  After a year, they moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, where he worked in sugar beets, and worked for a farmer.

Two years later the family moved, on the train, to Barrett near Houston BC.  There he met the love his life, Lammina (Lucy) Meints.  On March 2nd, 1962, at the age 32, he married her, in Houston BC, in -30 degree temperature.  Together they raised their family of 11; 7 boys and 4 girls, in Smithers BC.  They first lived on Railway Ave. then later, on 8th Ave.

During this time August worked for Pacific Inland Resources for 42 years.  On the side he took a course in electronics, and was janitor of his Church for 24 years. He spent many hours in the vegetable and flower gardens and was always doing repairs and/or renovations on the family home. He worked hard to provide well for the family.  He loved playing chess and even attempted to learn how to play games on the computer. His favorite past time, was camping, fishing and snowshoeing.  Unfortunately, he realized he loved golfing a bit late in his life and could not do that sport for very long.

His love and zeal for the LORD was very strong.  In fact, with the little spare time he had, he was serving numerous years on the Church council and/or the school board.  For 4 years August and Lucy lived at Astlais Place, Silverking Court, and then August had to go into the Bulkley Lodge for the last 3 years of his life.

August went to glory January 6, 2018.

He was preceded into glory by his daughter-in-law Peggy (Margaret Jane Barendregt) in 2006 and his great-grandson Kai Malan Morkel  in 2014.  His love and affection will be missed by his wife Lucy; his children Clara (Harry), Jane (Donald), Andy (Elizabeth), Dick (Elaine), George (Rebecca), Lamorna (Doug), Charles, Nick (Anna), Henry (Rhonda), Neil (Christy Martel), Leona; 42 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Preto and all the nurses at the Bulkley Lodge, ER and 3rd floor of the Bulkley Valley District Hospital, for their loving care for August.
