Maria Rosaria MellaceJanuary 29, 1922 ~ October 5, 2017 (age 95)
Maria Rosaria Mellace was born on January 29th, 1922 in Satriano, province of Catanzaro, Italy.
She was the seventh child in a family of eleven children born to Francesco Antonio Mellace and Anna Maria Teresa Vitale.
Maria Rosaria grew up and continued to live in Satriano until the mid-summer of 1961. She, along with her parents and her sister Maria, immigrated to Canada to join the rest of her siblings that were already living here in Smithers. Their voyage via the ship “Vulcana” took 10 days. They arrived in Halifax on August 29th, 1961 and then made their way west travelling for 5 days via train.
Maria Rosaria, being a talented seamstress and a devoted hard-working lady, had no problems finding employment. She was employed by 2 local shops before being hired by Eva at the Smithers Bridal Salon. Her sewing skills plus her attention to detail were second to none so she quickly gained a large clientele—extending from Prince Rupert to Prince George. She retired shortly after the salon was sold, but continued to sew and do alterations for family and friends up until 3 years ago when her health started to decline.
Her family was extremely important to her. She offered assistance in many forms to her immediate as well as to her extended family. Her home had a “welcome” mat for everyone – family as well as friends!
She loved to cook and would indulge many with her traditional southern Italian dishes.
Maria Rosaria has joined her parents, all her brothers and sisters and the rest of her loved ones that predeceased her. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces living in Canada, Italy, and France.
